International Students Class Participation

Goal

To help with improving Chinese international students' class participation experience.

Research Process

a) Think as An Insider and An Outsider

As an insider: I was majored in Accounting at Bentley Graduate School, where 27 out of 30 students were Chinese in a classroom. The class participation was mostly encouraged by professors asking questions.

I then became a student in the major of Human Factors in Information Design, where Chinese students were often less than 15%. The class participation is usually lively, fun and engaging. I gained the experience to learn how to participate in class。

 

Being an "outsider", I was able to

Being able to experience in and out of the circumstance, I am able to get to understand how Chinese international students think and feel as well as what should we improve for them in order to increase student participation and learning experience.

Future Improvement

I will ask students what recommendations they would provide to professors.

I will ask professors to make a few changes in class to observe whether there would be any change of students class participation.
