SafeRide: App Design for Bikers

Problem

The biggest concern for cyclists was safety on the road:

A greater visibility of cyclists is needed, especially at night, so they can raise the awareness of the automobiles around them.

Goal

Design an app and wearable products for bikers, so they can improve their safety issues.

Ideation and Design Process

  • Why app: users can choose what the routes they want to go

  • Why wristlet: In the rainy or snowy season, bikers might cannot read phone screen, while a wristlet enables the bike riders to read the directions easily and also keeps phone battery by turning off phone screens. A motion sensor wristlet can also help bikers to tell drivers which direction they want to go at night.

  • Why vest: a blinking light can raise awareness, but the drivers can not know the biking intention of bikers. A vest with signals on the back and front raises more attention and awareness of drivers by knowing where they are and where the bikers want to go.​

My Contribution

  • ​Generated questions for user research

  • Created persona and scenarios

  • Tested and collected feedback from users

  • Generated paper, and shot videos for demonstration

  • Presented the prototypes to class

Improvement for the Future:

  • We think of a few features such as biking community (bikers can share their experiences, compete their biking miles), road report (dangerous area, or under-construction area report by bikers),  but we did not make it into the prototype this time. Next time, we could add more features to make the app more fun to use.
