I. Problem Statement

Business Goal:

Provide “smart” recommendations to make travel planning convenient and fun by assisting in intelligent decision making.

Design Goal:

Reduce the stress and effort for travelers by providing options based on their intents so they can make informed decisions and enjoy travel and have fun.

II. Research

  • According to the article “Meet your lucrative millennial traveler” posted on the Tripadvisor website, millennials place utmost importance on tourist activities and online reviews in their decision making process of where to travel.

  • There is a growing need for recommendation systems to provide a ‘context ‘or why a particular recommendation is most suited to their needs.

  • Our team choose to leverage Tripadvisor’s current strengths- reviews, community data and current interface for this solution to make it an easy application.

  • Currently, Trip Advisor has an “Invite friends” feature that allows members to collaborate on creating their itinerary and adding notes.

III. How We Got Here

  1. We initially started by focusing on a decision making tool to help group travelers make decision in an in destination setting.

  2. After getting feedback and testing our the prototype, we found that users are less likely to spend time using such a tool especially on the go. They are looking for something fast and something personalized to them.

  3. Instead of adding more to what Tripadvisor’s platform already offers,  we decided to leverage what they already have and bring it one step closer to the user. By easing the access of information and tailoring it to the needs of the user, this solution can potentially improve their customer experience.
